Snapshot of Indiana Groundwater
2024 Snapshot
Groundwater monitoring wells observed aquifer recharge for most of the state did not start until January 2024. Only Lake County [5] and Jefferson County [2] monitoring wells observed aquifer recharge starting in the fall (October for both). Groundwater levels declined through January for Knox County [3], Tippecanoe County [6] and Wayne County [7]. The water table in Lagrange County [4] recovered a little in October, but did not experience substantial recharge before January. Jeffereson County [2] and Lake County [5] wells ended the year 1 ft and 1/2 ft below the start of year water levels, respectively. Lagrange County [4] and Wayne County [7] ended the year with increases in water table depths of 1/2 ft and 2 ft, respectively. The other monitored wells ended the year at about the same water level that they started. Four of the wells, in Jefferson County [2], Knox County [3], Lagrange County [4] and Lake County [5] appeared to be refilling at the end of the water year, while the other county monitoring wells were still decreasing.
