The State of Indiana Waters | Water Year Summary

Summary

Water year 2024 started with the continuation of drought conditions from the end of 2023. More than 80% of the state remained in Abnormally Dry (level D0 drought) or more severe drought condition through late-January when precipitation finally overcame the deficit for most (~70%) of the state. Drought conditions were not fully alleviated until mid-April. Abnormally dry conditions returned to more than 60% of the state from  June to mid-July when precipitation again returned to the state. By late-August, level D1 drought was starting to expand through the state, expanding to cover greater than 70% of the state in mid-September. At the end of the water year, there was a small decrease in D1 drought extent (to 68% of the state), while 100% of the state was classified as at least Abnormally Dry. Level D2 drought affected 6.5% of the state concentrated in the northeast, southwest and southeast parts of the state.
